In some cases, an allergy test may be necessary to identify all possible triggers and create the best treatment.

Contact dermatitis is another common form of eczema that occurs when the skin comes in contact with a certain irritant or allergen. Patients can suffer a flare-up if they are exposed to substances they are sensitive to, which can include:

• Metals (such as nickel)
• Fragrances
• Lotions
• Detergents
• Soaps
• Cosmetics
• Fibers (such as wool)
• Plants (such as poison ivy or poison oak)

Some patients’ eczema appears as small fluid-filled blisters that form on the palms of the hands, sides of the fingers, or soles of the feet. The cause of dyshidrotic eczema can be hard to pinpoint, but certain factors can increase your risk of developing it, including:

• Having a history of atopic eczema
• Having additional allergies
• Exposure to skin irritants, UV radiation, or extreme weather conditions
• Having overactive sweat glands
• Smoking

Nummular eczema, sometimes called nummular dermatitis or discoid eczema, appears as raised, coin-shaped patches on the skin. These itchy patches may “weep” (ooze clear fluid) before becoming dry and crusty. The causes for nummular eczema can be difficult to pinpoint and can vary among patients. Triggers may include experiencing certain skin traumas (abrasions, insect bites or stings, or burns), having naturally dry or sensitive skin, or having a history of atopic or contact eczema.

In some cases, nummular eczema presents similarly to ringworm, psoriasis, or certain skin infections. For the most accurate diagnosis, your Lanford Allergy specialist will speak with you about your flare-up and history with eczema, and we may perform a skin scrape to ensure your condition is, in fact, nummular eczema. Based on our evaluation, we will create an individualized treatment plan to tackle your flare-up quickly and effectively.
